Behind the Scenes: A Day in the Life of a Wedding Violinist

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes in the life of a wedding violinist? From the early preparations to the magical moments of the performance, being a wedding violinist is a whirlwind of excitement, creativity, and emotion. Join me as I peel back the curtain and invite you to explore a day in my life as a wedding violinist.

Early Prep: My work for a wedding begins long before I arrive to perform. By the time we've arrived at wedding day, I've already collaborated with the couple and finalized their musical selections, prepared my files and done a run-through with my equipment, ensuring everything is fully charged and at the ready. I've coordinated my attire, selected the instrument I'll be using, and packed my case with rosin, strings, and business cards. Attention to detail is key, as even the smallest of adjustments can make a big difference in the performance.

Travel and Set-Up: With equipment packed, it's time to hit the road. Whether the wedding is in a nearby city or a scenic countryside location, traveling to the venue is all part of the adventure - depending on the location, I may arrive the night before! (Sunrise elopement at Artist's Point in the North Cascades, anyone?) Upon arrival, I'll set up my equipment and familiarize myself with the acoustics of the space, paying special attention to balance, which can change depending on a seemingly small detail like being under a soffit or in front of a window.

Rehearsal and Sound Check: Before the guests arrive, I run a quick sound check to ensure everything is running smoothly. This is also the time for me to collaborate with the officiant (so we can pick up the Recessional at the best time depending on their script) and coordinate cues with the wedding planner (especially in the case of any unexpected delays in the timeline). It's all about making sure that everything is seamless and smooth, and just right for the big day.

The Ceremony: As the guests begin to arrive, the anticipation builds. The ceremony is the heart of the wedding day, and the violinist plays a crucial role in setting the tone. As guests get settled in the ceremony space, they are met with songs that have been especially selected and arranged to create a vibe tailored to the couple's unique style and preferences. At the start of the ceremony, the Processional underscores the wedding party and family entrance, leading up to the pinnacle moment: The Grand Entrance, when everyone in attendance rises to their feet in a sweeping and romantic gesture. I fade between these selections as I gauge the pacing, and ensure each moment is perfectly accompanied by the emotional swell of live violin music.

The Reception: After the ceremony comes the celebration. As the newlyweds and their guests move to the next phase of their celebration, I follow suit, seamlessly transitioning from one location to the next (I already have my second setup ready to go, for a super smooth transition between spaces and no extended delays.) Whether it's a cocktail hour, dinner, or dancing under the stars, I'm dedicated to providing the perfect soundtrack for each part of the celebration.

Reflecting on the Day: As the performance draws to a close, I take a moment to capture some footage from throughout the event. From the florals, to the venue, to the view, it's a time to savor the memories, celebrate the successes, and express gratitude for the opportunity to be a part of such a special occasion while bringing inspiration to others as they plan their own magical wedding days.

What do I do with the footage?

Being a wedding violinist is more than just playing music – it's about creating unforgettable moments, capturing the essence of love, and adding a touch of magic to one of life's most precious milestones. It's a job that requires passion, skill, and dedication, but for those who love what they do, there's no greater reward than being able to share in the joy of others on their wedding day.
